Welcome to Sulawesi Island
The peninsula of Sulawesi – once known as the Celebes reach out into the Sulawesi, Banda, Maluku and Flores Seas. Within its odd, contorted outlines – the Product of ancients continents – are extraordinary landscapes. Rigged mist – covered mountains, tropical rainforest, rice terraces, deep lakes dominate along the coast, coral reefs encircle dormant volcanoes, white sandy beaches fringed with coconut trees and scattered Bajau villages are flanked by rugged limestone outcropping. Sulawesi island with its natural beauty promises a real exciting experience to adventure.
Most of the island lies above 500 meters and fully one fifth lies above the 1000 meters mark. The highest peaks are found in Central and Northern South Sulawesi. The island’s highest point is on Mt. Rantemario, at 3.450 meters. Sulawesi has 11 active volcanoes and many fumaroles and volcanic springs. The most active are Mt.Soputan, Mt.Lokon and Mt. Siau on the island of Siau, between the mainland and Sangihe island.
Sulawesi has 13 lakes of more than 5 square kilometer surface area, including Towuti and Poso Lake, the second and the third largest lakes in Indonesia. Some are extremely deep, such as Lake Matano, the bottom of which, 546 meters from the surface, lies 160 meters below sea level. 900 meters deep Lindu Lake at Lore Lindu National Park.
The reefs around Bunaken island and neighbouring islands off Menado in the North are easily accessible. The unique coral reefs of Togian island in Tomini bay and Taka Bonerate, in Selayar island and the spectacular remote and shoals of the Tukang Besi island in Southeast Sulawesi.
Please notice that Sulawesi is home to an incomparable range of wildlife which can be seen in any of the National Parks, including the Lore Lindu National Park with it’s three magnificent valleys; Bada Valley, Besoa Valley and Napu Valley in Central Sulawesi. The three valleys keep a mysterious megalithics causes many anthropologist and archeologist are still curious to do research. As Sulawesi lies in equator line, 384 kind of birds settled in this island and 267 (70%) kind of birds are found in Lore Lindu National Park. Tangkoko National Park with it’s unique Tarsius Spectrum;a smallest monkey. Morowali National Park with the isolated Wana Tribe. Largest Rawa Aopa National Park in Southeast Sulawesi, which are home to Anoa, a wild mountain buffaloe. Like other ethnics group in Indonesia Country, Sulawesi has 27 ethnics group with different languages, culture and traditional activity.
The Torajan , who are still prevent their traditional culture like Burial Ceremony and Thanksgiving Ceremony. Their unique traditions and mystical life, makes visitors either foreign or domestic tourist always curious to visit Torajaland with a majestic landscape and distant blue mountains.
